Click-Through Rate (CTR)
Percentage of people who click on a link compared to total who saw it
Definition
Click-Through Rate (CTR) is calculated as (clicks ÷ impressions) × 100 and measures how effectively your content, ad, or link persuades viewers to take action. A 5% CTR means 5 out of every 100 people who saw your content clicked on it. CTR varies widely by channel: Google Ads average 3-5% for search, 0.5-1% for display; email campaigns average 2-3%; organic search listings 2-5% for top positions. Higher CTR indicates strong relevance between your messaging and audience intent. Improving CTR often involves better headlines, clearer value propositions, and stronger visual design.
Real-World Example
An email campaign sent to 10,000 subscribers gets 350 clicks. CTR = (350 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 3.5%. A/B testing subject lines raises CTR to 4.8%, generating 130 additional clicks from the same audience size.
