Unlike generic target markets ('B2B SaaS companies'), personas are specific individuals with names, stories, and contexts: 'Marketing Mary' is a 34-year-old Marketing Director at a 50-person SaaS company, overwhelmed by manual reporting, skeptical of new tools after bad implementations, needs executive approval for purchases, consumes content via podcasts during commute, and makes decisions based on ROI proof. Effective personas include: demographic data (role, company size, industry), goals and challenges (what they're trying to achieve and obstacles), content preferences (formats, channels, topics), buying process (how they evaluate, who's involved, timeline), and objections (concerns that prevent purchase). Personas guide marketing decisions: content creation (write for Mary's specific challenges), channel selection (podcast ads vs. billboards), messaging (address her skepticism with case studies), and product development (features she needs). Best practices: base on real customer interviews and data (not assumptions), create 3-5 personas (not 20), update quarterly, and give each persona a name and photo to make them memorable.
