Bounce Rate
Percentage of visitors who leave a website after viewing only one page
Definition
Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page sessions where a visitor lands on a page and leaves without interacting further (clicking links, filling forms, viewing other pages, etc.). High bounce rates can indicate poor page relevance, slow load times, bad user experience, or that visitors quickly found what they needed. However, context matters—a blog post with a bounce rate of 70% might be acceptable if users read the entire article, while a product page with 70% bounce rate suggests a problem. Different page types and industries have different normal ranges (40-60% is typical for content pages, 20-40% for service pages, 70-90% for blog/news sites).
Real-World Example
An e-commerce product page shows 100 visitors: 65 leave immediately without clicking anything (bounced), 35 click to other pages or add items to cart. Bounce rate = 65%. Investigation reveals slow image loading is causing visitors to leave before the page fully displays.
