Keyword Research
Process of finding and analyzing search terms people use to find content online
Definition
Keyword research is the practice of identifying, analyzing, and selecting the search queries (keywords and phrases) that your target audience uses in search engines. The goal is to discover high-value opportunities—keywords with sufficient search volume, achievable ranking difficulty, and strong commercial intent aligned with your offerings. The process involves: using tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to find keywords; analyzing metrics like search volume, keyword difficulty, and CPC; understanding search intent (informational, navigational, commercial, transactional); and mapping keywords to content. Effective keyword research considers three dimensions: relevance (does it match your offering?), authority (can you realistically rank for it?), and volume (do enough people search for it?).
Real-World Example
A Singapore AI marketing agency researches 'AI marketing' and finds: 'AI marketing' (8,100 volume, difficulty 72—too competitive), 'AI marketing automation Singapore' (320 volume, difficulty 28—achievable), 'AI marketing tools for small business' (720 volume, difficulty 35—good opportunity). They create targeted content for the lower-competition, location-specific terms, ranking within 3 months and generating 50+ qualified leads monthly from organic search.
